Sony interactive Entertainment has announced during its Q1 2023 results that the PS5 has shipped 41.7 million units worldwide. The news arrive just a few weeks after the format holder revealed that the console has sold 40 million units.
The PS5 moved a total of 3.3 million units during the three month period ended June 30, 2023. Sony is targeting PS5 shipments of 25 million for the whole fiscal year, helped in no small part by the arrival of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 and its accompanying limited edition bundle.
The PS5 was released in November 2020 during the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in major stock shortages that lasted for over 18 months due to reduced availability of vital manufacturing components. However, the console is now readily available worldwide, and for a limited time this month is up for grabs at £75 off the usual asking price.
In related news, there are strong rumours regarding the release of a new PS5 model featuring a detachable disc drive, as well as reports that Sony is working on a PS5 Pro for a project November 2024 launch.
